Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBAs) are the team leaders and experts when it comes to behavior management. Their role is to help IEP teams create plans to manage behaviors that affect a student’s learning; they work with the team to provide a comprehensive approach to behavior management that includes evaluation, data collection, interventions and regular progress monitoring. The BCBA certification requires a graduate level education and specialized training in behavior analysis and modification.

Children with severe developmental, learning, and emotional disabilities, aggression and mental health disorders often struggle to progress academically. It is not uncommon for these students to need behavioral support before they begin to respond to academic interventions. In such cases, an IEP team may determine that it needs the assistance of a BCBA.

BCBAs within the school environment utilize evidenced-based methodologies to assess students’ behavior and environmental factors that may contribute to the interference of the student’s ability to learn or interfering with the learning of others. The school-based BCBA will also make targeted intervention recommendations to the IEP team, including teachers and parents, to foster coordinated, supportive care to the student. BCBAs will assist in developing strategies for students’ improvement in the classroom, as well as in a variety of other environments and domains of a student’s life. BCBAs work with school staff to create a learning environment that promotes the student’s strengths and meets the student’s needs. 

If Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy has been recommended as a related service on the IEP, behavior analysts utilize their expertise to develop, monitor and maintain specific individualized programming while supporting and supervising the implementation in accordance to the principles of behavior analysis and ethical guidelines outlined by the Behavior Analysis Certification Board (BACB).

Additional common services may include: conducting formal and informal assessments, analyzing classroom data, writing and revising behavior-analytic treatment plans, training others on behavior-specific interventions as it relates to function of behavior, and overseeing the implementation more complex educational programming. BCBAs may also supervise BCaBAs (an undergraduate-level certification) as well as Registered Behavior Technicians, and others who implement behavior-analytic interventions.
